About Dr. Joel S.

Mental health distress can overwhelm every aspect of an individual’s life. It can greatly impact relationships, self-esteem, and overall health. Psychotherapy is a powerful method for restoring mental health wellness and facilitating both short-term and enduring positive changes in your life.

As a child, individual, and family therapist, I help my clients begin to create an understanding of their challenges and stimulate the process of healing. I utilize a collaborative approach with my clients, which provides them with a safe, non-judgmental, and compassionate space to become empowered to act and heal. I help facilitate understanding and self-awareness into their mental distress, helping translate this new understanding into improved mental health and overall well-being.

My goal is always to empower my clients with understanding and tools to navigate their mental discomfort. I have experience working with families with recent challenging diagnoses, families that might have long standing relationship and communication issues, and helping children and adolescents navigate conduct and emotional challenges.

I completed a bachelor’s degree in general psychology from Northeastern Illinois University, a master’s degree in health psychology from National Louis University, and a Doctoral Degree in Clinical Psychology from Adler University.  Additionally, I have been working with children and families in a variety of professional settings since 1998. I received the IDCFS Celeste Peña Community Service Award for 2018 in recognition for my professional service in the field of Child Welfare.  I have dedicated my professional life to helping others improve their quality of life.

In my free time, I love taking long walks in nature with my dogs. Every day, I try to wake and see the sun rise, it brings hope to every new day. I love and remain curious about the power of nature. Most importantly I am a husband and father of four.
